Creating Smiles One at a Time Using GatorZ Restorations
Patient presented with an edge to edge bite, as well as noticeable crowding and misaligned maxillary anterior teeth. Posterior occlusion was virtually non existent, with function relegated to her anterior teeth only.
Severe chipping and cracking of her anterior teeth were the result of her centric occlusion and edge to edge relationship with the lower. Due to her prominent para functional habits, #11 had fractured at the buccal surface. As a result, #11 received root canal treatment and metal post.
The patient’s request was simply, “I want my smile back”.. With function and esthetics in mind, we planned her smile makeover! Dr. Ryan Walker prepped #6-11, with the thought of straightening the smile and refining function without causing further damage to the lower arch. It was at this time we decided a cantilever pontic in the #5 space would be warranted. We splinted 5 (pontic), 6 (abutment) & 7 (abutment). The 2 to 1 relationship allowed us to incorporate subtle occlusion on #5.
The material of choice for this challenging case was full contour zirconia. We needed a material to address both strength concerns as well as the aesthetic aspect of this case. With this in mind, we chose Ivoclar e.max Zircad Zirconia, MT Multi Shaded Puck. This is what we refer to as our GatorZ material.
Using 3 Shape CAD/CAM, we digitally designed the case.
After design, milling and sintering, the restorations were produced and ready to finish. With slight adjustments to proximal and occlusal contacts as well as minimal contouring and texturing, we were ready to polish and glaze.
Since only subtle characterization was requested, we proceeded to stain, glaze and polish the restorations.Once we refined the contacts and checked occlusion one more time, it was on to Dr. Walker to seat the case for the patient. Our goal at Gator Ceramics is to create restorations that are both functional and aesthetic. When we achieve this goal, we save the dentist time and make the patient happy. I would say Goal Achieved!
